Practising as a Taxidermist

General Information

In order to practice as a taxidermist in the Republic of Cyprus one needs to obtain a taxidermy licence by the Game and Fauna Service.

Any physical person that wishes to obtain a taxidermy licence has to file an application to the head of the Game and Fauna Service on Type Z of the Annex VII of the Law for the Protection and Management of Birds and Game Species Law L.152(Ι)/ 2003-2017.

The application form for taxidermy licence can be submitted either through the PSC Cyprus or you can contact directly the competent authority (Head Offices or District Offices of the Game and Fauna Service):

  1. There are is no requirement for accompanying certificates to be submitted with the application.

Upon approval, the applicant pays the fee, as defined in Annex VIII, of €340 (electronic payment at the JCCSMART website (‘YΠΗΡΕΣΙΑ ΘΗΡΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΠΑΝΙΔΑΣ-ΠΛΗΡΩΜΗ ΑΛΛΩΝ ΤΕΛΩΝ’ – Άδεια Ταριχευτή), www.jccsmart.com, and through the same service at commercial banks also).

The applicant is informed regarding the authorization decision within 3 months from the date that the application form was duly submitted.

The head of the Game and Fauna Service grants a taxidermy licence for game species and wild fauna species to the interested person, which is valid for one year.

Administrative Action Against a Competent Authority’s Decision

Any person may file an Administrative Action at the Administrative Court against a decision, act or omission of any competent authority or body.

Pursuant to Article 146 of the Constitution, an Administrative Action may be lodged within 75 days from the date of the decision or act or omission or from the day when such decision or act or omission was notified to the applicant.

The Administrative Court acts as a cassation Court and not as a substantive Court. In other words, the Administrative Court may:
I. Dismiss the Administrative Action
II. Annul wholly or partially the contested decision or act
III. Compel the relevant authority or body to take a certain action

After a decision is annulled, the authority and/or public body must reverse things back to the state prior to when the concerned decision and/or act was executed and reexamine.

Appeal Information

An Appeal may be filed against the Administrative Court’s first-instance decision within a period of 42 days from the date such a decision was given.

At the Supreme Court (Court of Appeal Section) hearing, the contested issue of the appeal remains the legality of the decision or act already adjudicated. However, such a revision of the legality of the decision or act is solely examined on the matters and the extent that the two parties have limited the reasons in the relevant notice of appeal.

The decision adopted by the Supreme Court is considered final in relation to the matter that has been judged.

According to the article 61(4) of the Law 152 (I) of 2003-2017 every licensed taxidermist should exhibit his/her licence to a prominent place inside his/her workshop.

According to the article 61(5) of the Law 152 (I) of 2003-2017 a licensed taxidermist should keep a record/book with true and exact details for every wild fauna specie taxidermised, as mentioned in Type H, of Annex VII of the Law. For every wild fauna specie, three copies have to be kept. The first copy is given to the customer as a permit for the possession of the specie of wild fauna, the second copy is kept by the licenced taxidermist for supervision purposes and the third copy is sent to the head of the Game and Fauna Service.

According to the article 61(6) of the Law 152 (I) of 2003-2017 for every different specie of wild fauna or game brought in for taxidermy, the licenced taxidermist has to presented to a member of the Game and Fauna Service along with the record/book for taxidermy approval.

In accordance to the article 61(7) of the above referred Law for every authorized for taxidermy specie of wild fauna, a form has to be filled in; according to the Type F of the Annex VII. The lower part of the form accompanies the taxidermised specie and the upper part of the form is kept in the records of the licensed taxidermist.
